Trainee Eligibility & Responsibilities

  • Must be working as a full-time research technician/scientist (or equivalent) in the lab of a faculty member at UW or affiliate institution

  • Must have earned an undergraduate degree at an accredited institution; trainees with master’s degree are also eligible

  • Highly interested in pursuing a doctorate degree in biomedical science (PhD or MD/PhD); PROPEL is not appropriate for trainees who intend to apply to medical school

  • Must commit to participating in program curricula for at least one academic year; program curriculum is ~5hr/quarter and occurs during working hours

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident

Primary Mentor (Faculty) Responsibilities

  • Hire the Scholar and ensure financial stability.

  • Support the Scholar’s scientific growth by meeting at least monthly to discuss progress, offer feedback, and promote engagement through lab meetings, data sharing, and journal clubs.

  • Provide time and flexibility for the Scholar to participate in PROPEL curriculum and events, which average 5 hours per quarter.

  • Contribute to the PROPEL community by attending networking events, joining panels, and leading workshops

Secondary Mentor (Postdoctoral Fellows) Responsibilities

  • Participate in CIMER mentor training tailored for postdocs

  • Contribute to the PROPEL curriculum by developing and leading workshops, facilitating networking opportunities, and serving on panels

  • Meet quarterly with Scholars to discuss career development and offer guidance on graduate school applications
